Found Right Outside Our Door

Our Personal Talisman

The fall equinox marks an outward shift, the light that once felt expansive and endless begins to turn inward, toward something balanced and quiet. Trees nod toward this transformation openly, the way nature always signals change before we notice it ourselves. Those signals feel embedded in us too, in the same rhythm that lets us sync with cycles of becoming and letting go. Trees embody these truths simply: rooting, becoming, blossoming, bearing fruit, letting go. For complicated humans, the same truths take more convincing. We look to trees, to stars, to the cycles of the moon, as teachers of a wisdom that's simple but not always easy to trust. The redwood follows this cadence more quietly and consistently than most.

A dramatic change of season isn't evident in the leaves of this sacred tree, distinct from the autumn display of sycamores, bigleaf maples, and liquidambars. That's because the redwood carries its wisdom year-round. Letting go, for a tree like this, isn't a destination it arrives at once a year. It's a practice, ongoing and unhurried, the natural shedding of old needles happening in its own time throughout the year rather than all at once each fall. Even so, autumn has its own quieter markers here. The days grow shorter. The light turns clearer and crisper, no longer softened by the long haze of summer. And every so often, a second summer moves through, distinct from spring's warmth or summer's, the kind that pulls us out of winter's loneliness into something like becoming. This warmth arrives differently, less a season starting and more the year taking one last breath before it lets go.

Letting go comes naturally to trees. Leaves reach their potential and fall away gracefully, allowing the tree to place its energy into new growth that serves its longevity and well-being. A wisdom and a gift, offered to us if we simply observe their truth.

A Talisman To Remember

Our shop lives in the original edifice, erected in 1892, once the lumberyard's own office, where people came to select the wood that would become their homes. In the spirit of making, we carry that story forward, creating from the same walls. Old Mill Creek runs beside us the way it always has. The redwoods stand the way they always have. What began here more than a hundred years ago never really stopped. We're continuing it, shaping something new from what this place has always been.

In celebration of nature's most important wisdom, the art of letting go, we felt moved to create a talisman that could remind us of this truth. The redwood has long been revered for its resilience: some standing over a thousand years, surviving fires by regrowing from their own scorched trunks, carrying that same strength through centuries of drought and storm. A single Redwood Leaf, technically a needle, selected from our doorstep became the inspiration for our talisman, carrying every vein of the original into its cast counterpart. Along its spine, a spray of needles rather than a true leaf, we inscribed our talisman with three words that embody the wisdom of this ancient teacher: “Strength in the Sacred.”

Why We Reach for Nature to Carry Meaning

People have long been drawn to the natural world, its guideposts taking the form of leaves, feathers, and shells. Perhaps it's that sacred connection that reminds us of who we are at our core.

A stone carried in a pocket. A feather kept on a shelf. A single leaf, saved past its season. It's a way of carrying a moment of connection that's hard to hold any other way. Our talismans hold that same stillness, small enough to wear, close enough to return to every day.

Sacred redwoods have become a symbol for this kind of wisdom, growing along California's coast for thousands of years. They've survived fires by regrowing from their own scorched trunks. They've outlasted storms, droughts, and centuries that other living things have been ill-equipped to survive. They rely on a network of neighboring trees to form whole forests of greenery and foliage, and it's in that spirit of giving, one an entire ecosystem depends on, that they endure. They keep standing, season after season, quietly proving that endurance doesn't have to be loud to be seen.

Strength In the Sacred

The sacred history of this mysterious, ancient tree has become our symbol, a legacy. The redwood cycles gently between holding on and letting go, glowing all the while like a ray of green light to behold. Cast in yellow bronze or sterling silver, our Redwood Leaf talisman is a quiet reminder: take strength in the sacred, stand tall with deep roots, bend but don't break, and trust that the wind can make you stronger.

As the days shorten, the mornings become crisp, and the afternoon light begins to wane, we hope this piece carries a little of that same steadiness with you, and whatever comes next.
