Gold, the Sun & the Story of the Summer Solstice

Why humanity has treasured gold for thousands of years and what it can teach us about finding our inner light.

As we celebrate the Summer Solstice and the longest day of the year, we’ve been reflecting on the enduring relationship between gold and the sun.

For thousands of years, civilizations across the world associated gold with sunlight. Its warm glow, radiant beauty, and remarkable permanence made it the perfect earthly symbol of the sun’s life-giving energy. Long before modern science, people understood that there was something extraordinary about this luminous metal.

But what is it about gold that has captivated humanity for thousands of years?

Recently, while reading a fascinating book on the history of jewelry, ”Jewelry Through The Ages”, I came across a detail that stopped me in my tracks.

Gold is one of the densest naturally occurring metals on earth. A small piece of gold feels surprisingly heavy in the hand, far heavier than a stone of the same size. Because of its extraordinary density, rivers and streams naturally separated gold from lighter materials. As water carried away sand, gravel, and debris, the gold remained behind.

Nature itself became the first prospector.

Long before modern mining methods, people discovered gold in riverbeds and stream banks where water had done the work of revealing it. Some historians even believe that ancient gold collectors used sheep fleeces to capture tiny gold particles from streams, a practice that may have inspired the legend of the Golden Fleece.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that gold’s value extends far beyond its rarity.

Gold does not rust. Gold does not tarnish.

Gold can be melted, reshaped, and transformed, yet it remains gold.

Empires have risen and fallen. Currencies have come and gone. Fashion trends have changed countless times throughout history. Yet gold has remained treasured across generations, cultures, and continents.

There are very few things humanity has agreed upon for more than five thousand years.

Gold is one of them.

Perhaps that is why it became known as the metal of the sun.

Like sunlight itself, gold possesses an enduring quality. It shines with warmth. It withstands the passage of time. It reminds us of something constant and everlasting.

As we reflect upon the Summer Solstice, the moment when light is most fully revealed, we can’t help but see a deeper lesson hidden within the story of gold.

As rivers moved across the earth, they carried away lighter materials and left the gold behind.

Life often works the same way.

Over time, experiences shape us. Challenges test us. Seasons of change wash away expectations, fears, and old stories we no longer need. What remains is often the truest part of ourselves.

Gold was never created by the river.

The river simply revealed it.

Glow Through What You Go Through

As we celebrate the season of light, may we remember that our own inner light is much the same. It is not something we need to earn or create. It has been there all along.

Perhaps life’s greatest gift is helping us uncover it.

This Summer Solstice, we are honoring that idea with a special edition of our Sun Lotus Necklace. Each pendant will include a limited-edition engraving on the reverse:

A reminder that even through life’s challenges, your light remains.

May this season bring warmth, clarity, and the courage to shine brightly.

Happy Summer Solstice.

With love,

Stacy
