Jewelry Cleaning & Care

Investing in jewelry designed to last forever is akin to any long-term relationship—a certain amount of maintenance is required to ensure things stay shiny. But when it comes to jewelry, there is (thankfully) an easy equation for success. Be gentle and consistent with your care and your heirloom pieces will sparkle for years to come.

“Every spring, I take an afternoon to go through my own collection—it’s become one of my favorite rituals.

There’s something grounding about handling each piece with intention, remembering why I made it or where I found the stone. I hope this guide helps you do the same”

- STACY KING, FOUNDER

Karat gold

The most forgiving—with some limits.

Fine gold resists tarnish beautifully, but it can scratch. Clean with foam, warm water and a drop of mild soap, rinse thoroughly, and dry thoroughly. A popular choice for its balance and beauty, gold is decadent however, can be delicate. Whether you’ve inherited an heirloom, invested in a one-of-a-kind adornment, or have a sensitivity to certain metals - gold jewelry can maintain its timeless shine with regular care.

STERLING SILVER

Prone to tarnish—easy to restore.

Composed of 92.5% pure silver, sterling is prized for its durability and versatility with the ability to create a dark patina. Fortunately, most Lulu pieces are available in sterling silver. Avoid chlorine, perfume, and lotion. Store in an airtight pouch when not in use. Polish with a soft cloth regularly.

YELLOW BRONZE

Strong and durable—not indestructible.

Although all metal is prone to a little tarnish over time, our special formula of yellow bronze contains an oxidation-resistant component embedded within the alloy. This unique blend offers a golden alternative that cleans and shines as if it was solid gold. Yellow bronze is safe for foam cleaners, and polishing with jewelers cloth. Make sure to rinse well and dry fully.

NATURAL STONES

Porous and sensitive—each one is unique.

While many gemstones are durable, they are generally softer than diamonds and can be more prone to scratching, chipping, or cracking. It’s important to note that they require varying levels of care–even simple soap-water soaks can be harmful to certain gemstones. Clean with foam or wipe gently with a damp cloth only. Avoid over-soaking soft stones like turquoise, lapis, or opal. Keep away from ultrasonic cleaners.

JEWELRY FOAM CLEANER

Prepare for the jewelry cleaning process with the following materials: two bowls designated for soaking and rinsing; a soft microfiber cloth along with a hairdryer for thorough drying, and a jewelry cloth for final polishing.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

  • foam jewelry cleaner
  • soft toothbrush for scrubbing
  • 2 bowls for soaking and rinsing
  • soft microfiber cloth
  • hairdryer or fan for thorough drying
  • jewelry polishing cloth

INSTRUCTIONS TO USE:

  1. Submerge the jewelry in hot water to loosen dirt.
  2. Apply one to two pumps of Lavish foam cleaner letting soak for 1 minute then using a soft-bristled brush to scrub between crevices.
  3. Rinse in clean warm water until all traces of soap are removed.
  4. Transfer to microfiber towel to remove and remaining moisture and dry as much as possible.
  5. Use hairdryer on a low setting to fully dry in order to prevent oxidation from residual moisture.
  6. Finish by polishing non-plated metals with a jeweler's cloth.

JEWELRY POLISHING CLOTH

A jewelry polishing cloth is recommended for use on gold, sterling silver, platinum, gold-fill, and non-plated jewelry.

TO USE:

  • Use the inner white cloth to remove tarnish.
  • Follow with the outer gray cloth to buff, shine, and restore metal.

Note: Avoid using on porous stones such as pearl, turquoise, opal, or lapis
