Top 3 Mill Valley Hikes to Explore This Fall

Mill Valley in the fall is pure magic. Golden light filters through the redwoods, creeks run cool and clear, and the crisp air invites you to slow down and savor nature. Whether you’re visiting for the day or lucky enough to call this town home, here are three hikes that showcase the best of Mill Valley—all close to downtown and perfectly paired with a visit to Lulu Designs at the Mill Valley Lumber Yard.

1. Cascade Falls – A Gentle Stroll with a Big Reward

For the casual visitor who wants an easy walk but still hopes to see Mill Valley’s beauty up close, Cascade Falls is a must. Towering redwoods, a bubbling creek, wooden bridges, and the best part—a waterfall just steps from downtown.

  • Why it’s perfect: A short, family-friendly walk that feels like a secret escape into the forest.

  • Directions: From downtown Mill Valley, take Throckmorton Avenue and turn left on Cascade Drive. Park near Cascade Park or the O’Hanlon Center for the Arts. The trailhead is close by, and the falls are less than a half-mile in.

  • Pro tip: Best after a rainfall, when the creek is flowing.

2. Cascade Loop Trail – A Shaded Escape Right From Town

This trail makes for a peaceful loop walk through lush redwoods, perfect for stretching your legs without committing to a strenuous hike.

  • Why it’s ideal: Accessible, shaded, and scenic—it’s the kind of quick nature break that reminds you why Mill Valley is so special.

  • Directions: Start on Cascade Drive at the Cascade Trailhead. The trail circles through groves of redwoods and follows along Cascade Creek before looping back to your starting point. It’s just minutes from downtown, making it easy to add into any visit.

3. Matt Davis / Troop 80 Loop – A Local Favorite

If you’re up for a more invigorating adventure, this loop has it all: sweeping views, shady redwood groves, and a mix of flat stretches with heart-pumping climbs. It’s a true Mill Valley classic.

  • Why it’s memorable: Gorgeous variety—panoramic vistas at the top, forest serenity in the middle, and redwood shade to finish.

  • Directions: Park at the Mountain Home Inn on Panoramic Highway. Begin on the Matt Davis Trail, connect with the Troop 80 Trail to form the loop, and circle back to the Inn. Reward yourself with lunch on their deck overlooking the Bay.
